POLITICS: Rousseff’s supreme court nomination faces opposition

In the 125-year history of Brazil as a republic, its senate has only ever rejected five presidential nominations to the federal supreme court (STF), all during the government of President Floriano Peixoto (1891-1894). However, given the poisonous nature of relations between the executive and the legislature, there is a possibility that Edson Luiz Fachin, President Dilma Rousseff’s nomination for the space on the court left by the retirement of Joaquim Barbosa, may become the sixth.
