TRADE & DIPLOMACY: Vázquez makes big foreign trade push

Uruguay’s President Tabaré Vázquez will pay an official visit to Brasília on 21 May. There are a number of issues high up on his list of priorities during bilateral talks with his Brazilian counterpart President Dilma Rousseff. Chief among these is the importance of individual countries within the dysfunctional Southern Common Market (Mercosur) trade bloc being able to negotiate their own bilateral trade deals. Uruguay has long pushed for “open regionalism” but to no avail. Now it looks set to get its way.
