DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Focusing on re-election debate and not much more

The Dominican Republic (DR)’s ruling Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) has opted to amend the constitution to allow for consecutive re-election in a bid to permit President Danilo Medina to seek a second term in next year’s general elections. As anticipated, the move is proving controversial both within the ranks of the PLD and the political opposition [RC-15-05]. But the decision has also led other local organisations to warn the government and legislators against exclusively focusing on the re-election issue while neglecting other pressing matters.
