Guantánamo refugees reach settlement in Uruguay

Costa Rica: On 13 May Costa Rica’s President Luis Guillermo Solís arrived in the US for a multi-city tour aimed at attracting investment into Costa Rica. The ten-day tour organised by Costa Rica’s investment promotion agency (Cinde) entails meetings with representatives from the corporate, manufacturing, and science sectors, in a bid to renew business ties with firms that already have a presence in Costa Rica and to establish new ties with firms that may interested in investing there. Accompanying Solís on the tour are Cinde director, Jorge Sequeira, and Foreign Trade Minister Alexander Mora. In their first port of call in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Costa Rican delegation met representatives from the local chamber of commerce and the World Affairs Council of Charlotte (WACC) on 14 May. The visit to Charlotte, the first by an acting Latin American head of state, was productive as Solís secured pledges from firms, Dole Food Company, Precision Concepts Medical Technologies and online travel firm Expedia, to expand their operations in Costa Rica. All three firms promised to jointly create an additional 300 jobs in Costa Rica. Four days later the Costa Rican delegation arrived in Atlanta, Georgia, where they met representatives from other firms that currently have a presence in Costa Rica such as beverage firm, Coca-Cola; tyre and rubber manufacturer, Bridgstone; and credit agency, Equifax. Solís also met the authorities of the Georgia Institute of Technology with whom he discussed the possibility of cooperation in areas such as cyber security, mathematics, and sciences. The delegation is due to visit Austin, Texas, before concluding its tour in Chicago, Illinois, on 23 May.
