EL SALVADOR: Violence seen rising to new post-conflict peak

The announced suspension of gang attacks against the police and military did not materialise, nor did the hinted new ‘truce’ between at least some factions of the main gangs. Instead, El Salvador witnessed a new surge of violence which, by the standard most used by the local media, raised the daily average of homicides to 22 towards the end of May, 69% higher than when President Salvador Sánchez Cerén took office just under a year earlier.
