Weighing up the new anti-corruption system

President Enrique Peña Nieto promulgated a constitutional reform on 27 May creating a new National Anti-Corruption System (Sistema Nacional Anticorrupción), after its approval by the federal congress a month earlier. The multifaceted new system will not just rely on one body to combat corruption but several. Its success, however, will require cooperation from all state institutions and independent officials committed to rooting out impunity. President Peña Nieto said that it would help to ensure that just as doubts in the past about whether Mexico could make the transition to a full democracy with alternation of power were conquered, so the scourge of corruption would be successfully overcome now.
