Central America lags behind in the fight against hunger according to the State of Food Insecurity in the World (SOFI 2015) report released on 27 May by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Undernourishment in Central America has declined by only 38.2% since 1990; over the same period South America has been able to bring its rate down by more than 75%. Although Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua were all cited for achieving the Millennium Development Goal of halving the proportion of undernourished people by 2015 (MDG 1c), the FAO expressed worries over slower progress in El Salvador and Honduras, and over both an absolute and a relative rise in hunger in Guatemala.
