POLITICS: Bachelet’s popularity tanks

President Michelle Bachelet’s recent efforts to recover credibility – including a cabinet reshuffle and legislative measures aimed at tackling official corruption [RBS-05-05] – have had little impact. With a resurgence of protests by students and teachers against the government’s education reform - one of Bachelet’s three key electoral pledges (along with fiscal and constitutional reform) and top officials forced to step down because of corruption allegations - two recent polls put Bachelet’s approval rating at its lowest yet of either of her two mandates (her current term began in March 2014 and the previous one was in 2006-2010).
