POLITICS: Under scrutiny, BNDES president promises transparency

Brazil’s state development bank, Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social (BNDES), has a larger loan portfolio than the World Bank, but has never been audited since its creation in 1952. Since 2007, the bank’s total assets have grown fourfold, reaching R$814bn in June 2014. In 2013 alone, it disbursed around R$190bn, a figure higher than the annual output of Uruguay. But in the wake of the Petrobras scandal, the bank is under unprecedented scrutiny.
