POLITICS: Tensions flare once more between the PT and PMDB

While relations between the ruling Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) and its nominal ally, the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB), have hardly warmed, few public rows had made the headlines over recent weeks. Whatever détente the two may have enjoyed now appears to be over, however, following the PT’s recent congress in Salvador, Bahia. While activists voted to keep the alliance with the PMDB, the party faithful roundly booed any mention of the influential speaker of the lower house, Eduardo Cunha, who is from the PMDB. Cunha reacted by claiming it was hard to imagine that the alliance would be renewed ahead of the 2018 elections.
