Ecuador’s opposition daily El Universo announced in an editorial on 10 June its decision to invoke the constitutional right of resistance. The paper argued that it is in a “state of defencelessness” against the lawsuits called against it by the superintendency of information and communication (Supercom), the government body set up by President Rafael Correa in 2013 to police the country’s media. In the latest in a string of rulings against the newspaper, Supercom on 12 June ordered El Universo to pay a fine equal to 10% of its quarterly revenue (US$350,000) due to its refusal to publish in full a response by the Ministry of Communications (Secom) to an article published by the newspaper on 22 March.End of preview - This article contains approximately 775 words.
