MEXICO: Firearms & violence: refining the data

Between 2006 and 2014 Mexico’s federal authorities seized 308,881 firearms from suspected criminals. The figure emerges from data disclosed under freedom of information legislation to the newspaper El Universal by the federal procurator-general’s office (PGR) and the defence and navy ministries. Of the total, 66% were seized before the beginning of Enrique Peña Nieto’s administration ― indeed, 153,326 (50%) in the last two years of Felipe Calderón (2006-2012)’s term.
