EL SALVADOR: Conflicting theories about sudden spike in homicides

The chief of El Salvador’s national police and the head of the country’s forensic institute have disagreed publicly over the reasons for the sudden increase in the number of homicides in May. The former has elaborated on a theory that has been essayed repeatedly over the past year, namely that the main street gangs are deliberately, and in a coordinated fashion, stoking up the violence. The latter argues that the gangs lack the necessary organisation to orchestrate such a plan.
