TRINIDAD & TOBAGO: Continuing turbulence as Trinidad heads for the polls

Trinidad & Tobago will hold a general election on 7 September, which is just ten days short of the last possible date to which Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and her ruling People’s Partnership (PP) government could have stretched their May 2010 mandate. The contrast with the decision by then-prime minister Patrick Manning to call the 2010 general election two years before he needed to could not be greater. Manning’s decision cost him both his office and his role as leader of the People’s National Movement (PNM). New leader Keith Rowley is hoping to lead the PNM back to power amid a high degree of chaos in Trinidadian politics, but the voters appear to be still to make up their minds on the matter.
