Overall numbers of refugees seeking asylum in Central America in the year to December 2014 have increased by 7.9% on the previous year, according to a report published on 18 June by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Although the world population of refugees under the UNHCR's mandate increased substantially to 14.4m between 2013 and 2014, the Americas host the smallest share of the world's total refugees, 5% (769,000), not including those displaced within their own countries. Central America hosts just 0.2% of global refugees, the majority of whom are Colombians now seeking asylum mainly in Costa Rica and Panama.
