Bachelet bends to pressure and removes Eyzaguirre

With no sign of improvement in her dwindling popularity ratings, caused by recent corruption scandals and continued unrest over the government’s education reform, President Michelle Bachelet bowed to pressure and replaced her education minister, Nicolás Eyzaguirre. The president has opted for a more conciliatory choice as his successor - Adriana Delpiano, an experienced politician who held various roles under previous Concertación governments. Meanwhile, the country’s teachers remain on strike over demands that the ruling leftist Nueva Mayoría coalition withdraw a proposed reform of the teaching profession, Proyecto de Ley de Carrera Docente, a key part of the government’s overall education reform package.
