POLITICS: Papal visit leaves Morales triumphant

Pope Francis paid a much-publicised visit to Bolivia on 8-10 July as part of his first official trip to South America. Church-State relations in Bolivia have been strained under President Evo Morales and his left-wing ruling Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government, which first took office in 2006. President Morales says that ties with the Church have improved significantly since the 2013 election of Pope Francis - the first Jesuit and Latin American Pope - whose rejection of capitalism and consumer society and defence of the environment chimes with Morales’ rhetoric.
