“Peru is no longer the world’s leading cocaine producer”. So boasted President Ollanta Humala shortly after the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (Unodc) reported that Peru had managed to reduce its coca cultivation area by 14% last year. Humala attributed a consistent decline in Peru’s coca cultivation area in the past four years to his government’s coca eradication policies. Nonetheless, Peru is a long way from eradicating the illegal drugs industry.
