POLITICS: No clear-cut winner in the primaries

Even before 15% of the votes had been counted, news headlines proclaimed that Daniel Scioli, candidate of the leftist ruling Frente para la Victoria (FPV), a faction of the traditional Partido Justicialista (PJ, Peronists), had won Argentina’s 9 August mandatory national primaries. It would have been more accurate to say that he had attracted the biggest share of the vote, noting that this had fallen quite short of his expectations, namely, that it should have signalled that he enjoyed enough support to win the elections scheduled for October.
