Pedro Alliana comfortably won election as the new president of Paraguay’s ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC, Colorados) in internal elections held simultaneously by all of the country’s registered political parties on 26 July. Alliana’s victory is an important moment for President Horacio Cartes, who backed his candidacy despite strong criticism from ANR-PC dissidents, who accuse Cartes of seeking to gain control of the ANR-PC so as to do away with internal opposition to his administration. Now that Cartes and his allies have indeed succeeded in securing control, Cartismo looks set to become the dominant force within the party in the next few years.
