POLITICS & SECURITY: Humala targets the SL in his final address to congress

A heavy blow by the security forces to Sendero Luminoso (SL) guerrillas in the valley of the Apurímac, Ene and Mantaro Rivers (Vraem) allowed President Ollanta Humala to boast of success in his final state-of-the-nation address to congress. The government has come under fire due over its failure to tackle rising criminality in the country and so Humala used the opportunity to remind the public of significant progress against the remnants of the SL.
