COLOMBIA: Santos and Farc proposals incite criticism

Two of the main protagonists in the peace process being conducted in Cuba have excited controversy in recent days with their respective proposals for how to bring matters to a successful conclusion. President Juan Manuel Santos got the ball rolling by mooting the creation of a ‘congresito’ (‘mini congress’) to implement the eventual peace accords, seeming to sidestep the need to win public approval for them via a referendum. One of the senior members of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) negotiating team, 'Rodrigo Granda' (Ricardo Téllez), then called for guerrilla prisoners to be released en masse to seal any deal. This provided further evidence that the Farc has simply failed to grasp the fact that wiping the entire slate clean is neither legally nor politically viable.
