BRAZIL: São Paulo massacre revives issue of police violence
The worst chacina (massacre or multiple homicides) in recent years took place in early August in two municipalities of São Paulo. The fact that it was almost instantly attributed to the state’s military police drew attention back to the record of lethal police violence, which has been rising since late 2014, and the fact that the police involved appear to enjoy immunity. It drew strong condemnation from the Inter-American Human Rights Commission (CIDH), which the state’s public security authorities tried to deflect with arguments that their own data contradicted.
