PERU | Shootdown law approved. On 20 August Peru’s single-chamber congress approved, by a comfortable majority, the law on ‘control and vigilance of the national airspace’ which allows the use of force against and shootdown of aircraft known to or suspected of carrying illegal drugs, bombs, firearms, explosives and biological weapons ― if they are declared ‘hostile’ for not obeying instructions given by intercepting air force planes. Suspicious circumstances that will attract interception include flying outside the corridors established by the aeronautical authorities, at an altitude below 3,000 feet or within a radius of 40 nautical miles of determined locations, such as the Apurímac, Ene and Mantaro valley (VRAEM).
