COSTA RICA | ‘Drug gangs behind rise in murders.’ On 4 August the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ), the investigative police, reported that in the first six months of this year there had been 269 homicides, 50% more than the 179 recorded in the same period of 2014. Acting OIJ director Gerald Campos attributed most of the murders to turf wars between drug-trafficking gangs. ‘Most of the perpetrators and most of the victims,’ he said, ‘have records for drug vending.’
