TRADE & DIPLOMACY: Deepening ties with South Korea

Ecuador and South Korea announced the start of negotiations towards a trade agreement on 25 August. Ecuador’s trade minister, Diego Aulestia, met his South Korean peer, Yoon Sang-jick, in Seoul to announce the official launch of talks, with the first round scheduled to take place before the end of 2015. Aulestia, who travelled to the South Korean capital with the minister for production, employment and competitiveness, Nathalie Cely, confidently predicted talks would be concluded next year. Ecuador has a yawning trade deficit with South Korea, which it is seeking to close, and hopes to emulate the Asian tiger’s successful focus on lifting educational standards and being at the cutting edge of technological innovation.
