POLITICS: Outrage over López verdict

In response to his harsh trial verdict, opposition leader Leopoldo López has called for a large opposition turnout in the 6 December legislative elections. The verdict will add to the mounting tensions in the country in the run-up to the ballot, ahead of which polls indicate that the ruling Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela (PSUV) is looking vulnerable. Many in the opposition suspect that the government is ready to use any pretext to call off the vote - for example the border ‘emergency’ - and may seek to deliberately stoke violence so as to justify radical measures.
