Bolivia and Venezuela firm up ties

On 12 October Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro met his Bolivian counterpart, Evo Morales, a close ally of Maduro’s late predecessor, Hugo Chávez (1999-2013), in Bolivia. The two leaders agreed on a 10-year binational plan covering productive development, trade, energy and security. They also agreed to strengthen cooperation within the framework of the Venezuela-led radical left-wing regional intergration bloc, Alianza Bolivariana para los Pueblos de nuestra América (Alba)-Tratado de Comercio de los Pueblos (ALBA-TCP). This was set up by Chávez in 2004 as an alternative to the US-sponsored Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), which collapsed the following year.
