POLITICS: Following regional elections success, government prepares for peace referendum

Colombia’s ruling Unidad Nacional coalition performed suitably well in the 25 October regional and municipal elections. The three parties that make up the centrist coalition - Partido de la U (PU), Partido Liberal (PL), and Cambio Radical (CR) - in general performed better than their rivals on the left and the right. This prompted President Juan Manuel Santos to claim that the electoral results provided a clear sign of support for his efforts to secure a peace deal with the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrillas. Seeking to capitalise on this, Santos and his aides have decided to press on with their plans to hold a public referendum on an eventual peace deal reached with the Farc in the first half of 2016. But the Santos administration may be getting ahead of itself as all the conditions to hold such a referendum are not yet currently in place.
