Kerry congratulates Macri

Argentina: On 23 November US Secretary of State John Kerry congratulated Argentina’s President-elect Mauricio Macri via a press release and promised to work ‘‘closely’’ with the new government. Kerry congratulated the people of Argentina on the successful second-round presidential election that took place on 22 November and expressed confidence regarding continued US-Argentina cooperation on regional security, human rights, and human development under the incoming Macri administration. Kerry also highlighted Argentina’s leadership at the United Nations regarding nuclear non-proliferation and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transexual (LGBTI) rights and voiced interest in expanding cultural and educational exchanges and scientific collaboration. Macri, the leader of the centre-right Propuest Republicana (PRO) party who ran on a ticket for the Cambiemos coalition, will assume the presidency on 10 December, after receiving 51.4 % of the vote in the second-round presidential run-off election. His tenure could bring changes for US-Argentine relations as Macri’s pro-business stance represents a break from the protectionist economic policies adopted by the administrations led by President Cristina Fernández and her late husband and predecessor, Néstor Kirchner (2003-2007). Bilateral relations have been strained under the Fernández administration in part due to legal disputes in the US courts between US creditors and Argentina over the country’s defaulted sovereign debt.
