The state of Colima is set to become the first to hold gubernatorial elections this year, with its extraordinary elections due to take place on 17 January. The outcome of this heavily contested election, in which the right-wing opposition Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) is attempting to unseat the nationally ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) in a state that has always been under the latter’s control, may very well set the tone for the 12 other gubernatorial elections that are scheduled to take place this year. Success in Colima could help the PRI or the PAN build momentum and ensure a solid performance in the gubernatorial elections, which in turn are seen as a key test ahead of the 2018 presidential elections.
