COSTA RICA-NICARAGUA: ICJ hands down long-awaited verdict
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague last month issued its ruling on the case filed by Costa Rica in 2010 against Nicaragua over the latter’s dredging of the San Juan River which divides the two countries. A clear victory for Costa Rica, the ruling – which found that Nicaragua had “invaded and occupied Costa Rican territory” – has been accepted by the Nicaraguan government led by President Daniel Ortega. This has fueled hopes for an improvement in bilateral ties which have been strained of late over a separate issue - the Cuban migrants left stranded in Costa Rican territory following Nicaragua’s closure of its border (see box next page).
