El Salvador’s two dominant and deeply divided political parties have finally managed to agree on a candidate to take over as the country’s new attorney general. This is a pivotal role given spiralling homicide rates amid a rapidly deteriorating public security situation. Douglas Arquímides Meléndez Ruiz, a career lawyer with no overt party political affiliation, was sworn-in on 6 January. His approval required a super majority in the 84-seat legislative assembly, which means an agreement had to be thrashed out between the ruling left-wing Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) and the right-wing Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena).
