CHILE POLITICS: Corruption scandals continue to proliferate

There would appear to be no end in sight to the corruption scandals which have been fuelling public anger with the political and business classes over the past year, causing considerable damage to the approval ratings of both President Michelle Bachelet’s government and the political opposition. As well as evidence of fresh scandals and price-fixing in new sectors, various developments have ensured that three of the major scandals which broke last year – the illegal campaign financing scandals involving the financial group Penta (‘Pentagate’) and the mining company, Sociedad Quimica y Minera S.A. (SQM) as well as the so-called ‘Caval case’, which implicates President Bachelet’s own daughter-in-law, Natalia Compagnon Soto - have remained firmly in the public eye.
