URUGUAY POLITICS: New party proposed

Uruguay’s Partido Independiente (PI) proposed the creation of a “social-democratic alternative” last month composed of the country’s moderate centrist politicians. “Uruguay needs an alternative like this,” Senator Pablo Mieres, the PI leader, said. “What we’ve had so far is a dichotomy between the ruling leftist coalition, the Frente Amplio [FA], dominated by the most radical sectors, and the option of the traditional parties dominated by the most conservative representatives,” Mieres added.
