El Chapo recapture produces political fallout

In a major coup for the government led by President Enrique Peña Nieto, Mexico’s federal security forces recaptured the fugitive drug kingpin Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán Loera on 8 January, almost six months after he escaped from the Altiplano I maximum security prison [RM-15-08]. While Guzmán’s recapture during an intelligence-led operation provided the Peña Nieto government with some vindication before critics both at home and abroad, it has also produced some unexpected political fallout. The government has been criticised by the political opposition for revealing that it will now seek to extradite Guzmán to the US to face trial there. It has also come under fire for failing to clear up the circumstances in which Guzmán managed to escape and prosecute all those suspected involvement- including government officials.
