PRI retains Colima, builds momentum ahead of June elections

Mexico’s ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) claimed victory in the Colima extraordinary gubernatorial elections held on 17 January [RM-16-01]. Having twice fought off the strong challenge presented by the right-wing opposition Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) to retain control of the state, the electoral victory is a major boon for the PRI, which gives it the momentum ahead of the 12 gubernatorial elections that are scheduled to take place on 5 June. In contrast, for the PAN and the rest of Mexico’s political opposition the result is disheartening as it shows that despite the recent politico-electoral reform, the PRI cam still find ways to take advantage of its dominance of state governments to influence gubernatorial elections.
