Mexico City gains state status

After years of campaigning, Mexico City is now set to acquire state status after, on 29 January, President Enrique Peña Nieto sanctioned into law a political reform bill benefiting the country’s capital. Obtaining state status will give Mexico’s largest constituency greater political autonomy, including the chance to draft its own constitution as all of the country’s 31 states.
