VENEZUELA: A volatile conflict of powers

Venezuela is immersed in a complex conflict of powers, which pits the newly opposition-controlled legislature, the Asamblea Nacional (AN), against the executive led by President Nicolás Maduro, as well as against the supreme court (Tribunal Supremo de Justicia – TSJ), appointed by the president. As 2016 begins the picture is further complicated by the real possibility of economic collapse, a potential default on foreign debt, and the threat of violence. The outcome is uncertain.
