GUATEMALA: Morales shakes up military top brass

Days after President Jimmy Morales and his conservative Frente de Convergencia Nacional (FCN-Nación) government took office on 14 January, the new president fired Alfredo Sosa Díaz, the head of the joint chiefs of staff. Morales insisted the move was procedural but Sosa Díaz had been in the post for just over six months and his departure is widely considered the result of a power struggle in the security institutions – and in particular with Defence Minister William Mansilla Fernández, one of the few ministers Morales retained from the previous Partido Patriota (PP) government.
