Former president Francisco Flores (1999-2004) died on 30 January. Flores had been under house arrest awaiting trial for corruption. He was accused of embezzling US$15m of donations from Taiwan meant for victims of two earthquakes that ravaged the country in 2001. Flores suffered a brain haemorrhage on 24 January since when he had been in a coma. His death raises concerns that the corruption case might never get off the ground now, even though leaders of the opposition right-wing Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena) were clearly implicated in a legislative investigation last February into misappropriation of the Taiwanese funds.End of preview - This article contains approximately 735 words.
