The number of homicides in Costa Rica reached a record high in 2015, piling pressure on the government led by President Luis Guillermo Solís to come up with a concerted plan to stem the tide of violence. There were a total of 558 murders in 2015, a massive 17% increase on the previous year. The majority of the murders were attributable to organised crime, according to figures released by Costa Rica’s Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ).
