COSTA RICA: Solís under pressure after record murder rate

The number of homicides in Costa Rica reached a record high in 2015, piling pressure on the government led by President Luis Guillermo Solís to come up with a concerted plan to stem the tide of violence. There were a total of 558 murders in 2015, a massive 17% increase on the previous year. The majority of the murders were attributable to organised crime, according to figures released by Costa Rica’s Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ). The surge in murders has seen insecurity come close to displacing unemployment as the main public concern.
