BRAZIL ECONOMY: Sending all the wrong signals

Amidst the worst recession since 1901, the new finance minister, Nelson Barbosa, appears to be moving away from the austerity measures that characterised the tenure of his predecessor, Joaquim Levy. Despite Barbosa’s claims that the government is still committed to fiscal adjustment, critics are sceptical, with some in the conservative Brazilian media arguing that President Dilma Rousseff is returning to the looser fiscal policies of her first term (2011-2014).
