ARGENTINA ECONOMY: Indec reboot gets off on the wrong foot

In a move heavy with symbolism, Graciela Bevacqua, the former head of Indec (the national statistics institute), was appointed the organisation’s technical director in December, almost ten years after she was fired. For many opponents of former president Cristina Fernández (2007-2015), Bevacqua was considered a martyr, purged from office for refusing to manipulate official statistics to appease her political masters. Following her exit, Indec’s figures soon lost credibility, to the point where the International Monetary Fund (IMF) took the unusual step of criticising them. But her rehabilitation, and that of Indec itself, is not going smoothly, and on 16 February she was removed from her position.
