URUGUAY SECURITY: Record homicide figures

Interior Minister Eduardo Bonomi was hauled before the standing senate commission on 4 February to respond to opposition concerns about crime and insecurity in Uruguay. Bonomi acknowledged that 2015 was the year with the highest recorded homicide rate since the government began publishing official crime statistics in 1980. According to the interior ministry, there were 289 homicides in the country in 2015, compared to 262 in 2014 and 260 in 2013. The bulk of these (59%) took place in Montevideo, with 9% in the adjacent department of Canelones and 32% in the rest of the country.
