Nascent diplomatic relations between Ecuador and Turkey were dealt a serious blow on 4 February after a violent incident during a speech made by Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the national higher studies institute (IAEN) in Quito. Three women in the audience heckled Erdogan, yelling ‘‘murderer’’ in Spanish, and were quickly set upon by the Turkish president’s personal guards. President Rafael Correa later denounced the incident as unacceptable and the Turkish ambassador was hauled in to provide an explanation.
