PERU ECONOMY: Amazon oil spill heightens environmental worries
Ruptures in Peru’s main crude oil pipeline – known as the Oleoducto Norperuano and originally built in the 1970s - were reported to have led to a spill of 3,000 barrels of crude in the Amazon region, polluting the Chiriaco and Morona rivers. Reports said that by contaminating river fish, the spill could have a negative health impact on a number of Achuar indigenous communities living in the area. Organismo de Evaluación y Fiscalización Ambiemental (OEFA), Peru’s environmental regulation agency, said that the state-owned oil firm, Petroperú, could face PEN60m (US$17m) worth of fines because of the spills which occurred in late January and early February.
