Should the PVEM be disbanded?

In an online declaration published on 9 February, a group of Mexican intellectuals described the Partido Verde Ecologista de México (PVEM) as “an embarrassment” and claimed that it should be disbanded to improve “the health of the country’s democracy”. The signatories argued that the PVEM did not uphold the values of green parties around the world, citing its support for capital punishment and the provision of licenses for open-pit mining and hotel development in protected areas. The document garnered 359 signatures (287 from academics, 35 from civil organisation members, 30 from independent professionals, and seven from government employees).
