Unachievable targets set to haunt new Jamaica government

On 3 March, Jamaica’s new prime minister, Andrew Holness, was sworn in following confirmation that the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) had won the 25 February election by a one-seat margin. On 4 March, a team from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) arrived in Kingston to meet with Holness in order “to exchange views on the economic challenges and opportunities that Jamaica faces at this juncture”. Amongst the IMF’s concerns will have been Holness’ election promises on job creation, which look fanciful under any reasonable economic projections. And yet it was the promises on jobs, along with income tax reductions, that appear to have swung the election.
